My name is Mariel (better known as faeriedevilish online since I was 12 years old). I’ve been obsessed with the intersections between new media and society, as well as activism, for the past 15+ years. In the past, my online persona spoke a lot about food, gymnastics and Olympism – which might explain some of the oldest posts on this site (or from faeriedevilish in other spaces).
I am from Mexico City, where I spent all my time plotting how to save the world, eating spicy vegetables and watching funny cat videos. I am now based in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where I am a doctoral student at the Science, Technology, and Society program at MIT; an affiliate at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet and Society at Harvard University; and an affiliate at the Data + Feminism Lab at the MIT Department of Urban Studies and Planning. Before that, I graduated from the Comparative Media Studies program and a research assistantship at the Center for Civic Media at MIT. My ongoing interests are youth and media, digital literacies, privacy and surveillance, civic and moral education, participatory processes and feminism. My current interests are mutual aid networks and community group platforms online.
Before I became a student again, I worked in technological capacity building for a few years. I was a Junior Program Officer at Wikimedia Foundation’s Rapid Grants Team; I did research and instructional design as an external consultant for organizations like the Open Knowledge Foundation and Internews; I mentored young content creators at UNICEF; I did practical research, training and community building at SocialTIC (and some of its projects, like Escuela de Datos), as well as content and communications strategy at Nova México. I was a summer intern at the Youth and Media Lab at the Berkman Center for Internet and Society. Before all this, I studied philosophy at the National University of Mexico.
Ah – as for the type of professional hippy I want to be? One that gets to make a difference in the world from a field where culture, technology and philosophy meet.
Especially, one that spends more time doing things than talking about getting things done.
